4 Book Writing Tips for Non-Writers

How To Write a Book 300x215 photoOkay so not everyone out there considers themselves a writer, which I understand. But the allure of publishing books on Amazon has become so great that even those with an intense fear of picking up the pen find themselves salivating at the possibilities.

Or at least they should be. If they are smart they are.

The truth is that you don’t have to write a word if you don’t want to. You can still make money by publishing Kindle eBooks. It is possible.

So how do you go about doing it, you may be wondering? Well as it turns out, there is more than one way to skin a cat as the old saying goes.

First of all I’d like to encourage you to take a stab at it yourself. Remember that it doesn’t have to be perfect, in fact it can be far from it and you can still do well for yourself selling your books for the Kindle device.

I’m going to give you some ideas and book writing tips for that here in just a moment. But let’s start out with the hands-free option first.

Hire a Ghostwriter

This is perhaps one of the most obvious ways to publish a book without ever writing a word. Celebrities do it all the time and I can pretty much guarantee that just about every single president who writes a memoir after serving in office does NOT write it himself.

They find a really expensive and reputable ghostwriter who specializes in taking their notes and story in whatever form it exists in and transcribing it into a readable bestseller in most cases.

So the good news for you is that you won’t have to pay out the ass to outsource your book writing. There are tons of reliable sites where you can hire writers who are experienced with any type of writing, even fiction!

A couple good ones are oDesk.com or Freelancer.com. I’ve used both for various things, including book writing. My experience with both has been very positive and I would recommend them if you want to publish a Kindle book but aren’t interested in doing any of the writing.

A little word of caution: I strongly suggest you require that the writer is a native English speaker and you need to make sure that you protect your own rights by insisting that they sign a non-disclosure agreement that clearly states all ownership of the content is transferred to you upon completion and payment.

It never hurts to require a writing sample if you want to make sure you get a good deal without taking a big risk, especially if you’re hiring someone to write a longer fiction type of book.

Use Story Plots and Expand on Them

photoAnother option that helps to reduce the amount of writing you will need to do is to purchase a package of story plots that are pre-written as the basis for your book content.

These are usually sold to more than one person, but luckily for you 99% of the people who buy these never freakin’ use them at all. They are just another addition to an already crowded hard drive and they will sit collecting digital dust until their computer crashes.

If you want to be in the remaining 1% of buyers, then find a high-quality collection of fiction plots and do one of two things with them. The first option is to take a stab at it yourself. These books usually give you a couple thousand words to start with that outline the plot of the story and the characters.

Next they break it down into chapters for you, telling you what should take place in each one and this acts as a sort of outline for the remaining text which will be up to you to add now.

The second option is to pick your favorite plot from one of these products and then forward that to a ghostwriter and simply have them finish the full length story for you. Then all you have left to do is upload to KDP and start making money.

Use Mindmaps to Write a Memoir

If you’re not real hot on the idea of actually writing your book, there are a couple ways to avoid the mechanics of writing while still retaining the creative control over the content and telling the story yourself.

You can do this using mindmaps and it’s free. I recommend downloading FreeMind if you’re a PC user. It’s got everything you should need to start building your own mindmaps and it’s very easy to use.

So how do you use mindmaps to tell your life story? You can start your memoir by simply creating the center of your map and labeling it something as simple as “I am born” with a date attached to it. Or you can do it anyway that you prefer, obviously.

From there, try adding the major phases of your life. These might include early childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, midlife crisis, etc.

For each phase, add child nodes for the major events which took place during each of them. Graduation, having kids, big accomplishments and special moments you won’t be forgetting any time soon. Whatever you think needs to be included. Add dates to everything and just put a brief label or short description.

By the time you have finished this project, you almost have a short book already written. You just have to go back and add the details, at least the ones you want to share.

Use Speech Recognition Software

So last but certainly not least, maybe you really don’t want to write your story but does that mean you can’t tell it instead?

I mean this quite literally. Speech recognition software has made insane progress and is now a viable option for getting your book written without ever typing or writing a single sentence.

My favorite is Dragon Naturally Speaking. It really helps speed up the writing process once you get used to how it’s used. Just get a headset that will work with the software and find a quiet room where you can sit down and just pretend that you’re telling your story to a good friend of yours who is sitting across the table from you.

Dragon takes care of the rest. It’s truly an amazing software.

So are there any book writing tips I’ve left out? If you’ve published a Kindle book without actually writing it, share how you went about this in the comments.
